What EPQ stands for
EPQ stands for Extended Project Qualification. It is a Level 3 qualification based on an independently managed project, supported by teaching and supervision at the student’s school or college.
Depending on the specification, the outcome may be a written investigation or another type of product with supporting written evidence. Check the exact requirements with the supervisor.
Who it may suit
An EPQ can suit a student who wants to investigate a question beyond ordinary lessons and is willing to manage a longer piece of work. Interest matters, but so does having enough time alongside other qualifications.
Before choosing it, discuss workload, school support and the proposed question. An extra qualification is not automatically the best decision for every student.
The project stages
The stages usually overlap. Early reading may change the question; later research may reveal a gap in the plan. Record why those changes were made.
- Explore an interest and agree a viable proposal
- Plan tasks, deadlines and resources
- Research and evaluate evidence
- Develop the project outcome
- Review decisions and limitations
- Prepare the presentation and final submission
How it differs from ordinary coursework
The student takes substantial responsibility for the question, research and decisions. The final piece alone does not tell the whole story: planning, development and reflection matter too.
Common difficulties include collecting too much reading, delaying decisions and writing a log only at the end. A small weekly review is more useful than discovering those problems just before submission.
